The Girls Home - June 2007
This is commercial kitchen racking available at various stores that supply storage solutions for the home. The bottom cage is a standard powder coated wire cage we purchased at a local pet store that sits on a melamine covered board (most "big box" home building stores will cut these to size for a minimal fee). The hanging basket is a plant hanger from a dollar store (we removed the plastic liner). The bedding is primarily loose pieces of fleece we buy at dollar stores and when they are on sale at large department stores or discount stores. We added extra corner shelves from the pet store. We also use old style metal shower curtain hooks for our basic hanging needs. We get them at dollar stores.

The top of the cage is a covered melamine board, again we use fleece, or cotton cloth. The cubes are a Rubbermaid product as well as the liners. The cubes are not exactly inexpensive, but are powder coated heavy gauge metal. The liners have lasted well over a month, but we are looking at alternatives. The wood hut and stoneware bowl are standard pet store items.

The side view shows the larger (chinchilla) wooden "Sleep-N-Ledge" we purchased at out local pet store. We were not comfortable watching our little ones climb the side of the cage, especially on the climb back down, so we added these for safer access. Or course, all of this is because we have an open door habitat theme.

We try to keep our habitats on the simpler side with alot of our ideas being furnished by dollar stores and department store clearance sales. We also try to make sure that our boys and girls get plenty of free range time outside of their respective habitats for a change of pace as well.
